This year’s 14th August celebrations were among the loudest, most passionate, and most heartfelt seen in decades. True patriotism cannot be manufactured from above—it comes from within—and this year, it was evident to all that Pakistan’s recent military and diplomatic victories have helped unite a divided nation. For the first time in years, the process of healing feels within reach, and it was fitting that Independence Day festivities across the country centred on themes of unity and renewal.

From President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif urging the nation to rise above divisions and work for a Pakistan built on justice, equality, and service to all, to the celebrations held from the Makran coast to the mountains of Gilgit-Baltistan, there was a shared commitment to building the most prosperous Pakistan possible. Central to this spirit was the recognition of those who have made this moment possible—the Pakistani Armed Forces—whose defence of the country against a larger, belligerent opponent in May reignited national pride. Civil and military leaders, alongside the martyrs of the Marka-e-Haq, were honoured with Independence Day awards for their gallantry, courage, sacrifice, and unwavering dedication to Pakistan’s success. It was equally heartening to see figures like Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar awarded the Nishan-e-Imtiaz for exceptional work on the diplomatic front—efforts that have brought Pakistan out of isolation and back onto the world’s diplomatic stage.

This is a rare moment in Pakistan’s history when the people, government, military, judiciary, and other state institutions stand united rather than divided. Hope now glimmers where it had long been absent. It is the responsibility of all stakeholders to channel this renewed energy and optimism into shaping a stronger, more just, and more prosperous Pakistan.
