Israel enjoys the respect of its citizens and support from Western powers such as the US and UK. Yet, it remains unpopular in many Muslim-majority nations like Iran, Pakistan, Yemen, and Syria. Conversely, Iran is admired in much of the Muslim world but viewed with suspicion in the West.
This mutual mistrust fuels symbolic acts of disrespect that deepen divides. In some Muslim countries, Israeli flags are placed on the ground to be walked on. In retaliation, some Israeli markets reportedly deface the Saudi flag—which bears sacred Islamic words—deeply offending Muslims. These actions, though symbolic, only inflame tensions and obstruct peace. As Muslims, we hold our faith and symbols dear—and it is only fair to expect others feel the same about theirs.
Real change requires mutual respect. Peaceful protest and boycotts can be powerful, but targeting religious symbols only invites further hatred. Respect does not weaken our position; it strengthens it. By promoting dignity and understanding, we uphold the values of Islam and show the world a better path forward.
Let us choose respect over provocation and build a future grounded in peace and justice.
