Azlan Shah Cup was a warm-up of Asia Cup

LAHORE - Pakistan Hockey Federation Secretary Asif Bajwa believes that the Azlan Shah Cup Hockey Tournament has provided a healthy practice to the team ahead of the Asia Cup. Pakistan team was placed fourth in the event that was won by India. Pakistan lost to New Zealand for a fourth place after it lost to India in the Semi-final. The team arrived here from Malaysia on Wednesday. Talking to media at the airport the PHF secretary said that it was wrong to blame the PHF for the defeat. "In fact it was the previous set up that had pushed the team to defeat and the present administration was not responsible for team's poor showing in Azlan Shah Hockey Tournament. "The blame lies on the previous PHF's set-up for the defeat," he added. He told reporters that players had a good practice in the recently concluded Azlan Shah event that would help the player overcome their weaknesses in the forthcoming tournament. He further said return of the experienced players in the side would strengthen the team, which would perform well in the future. However, it would be premature to blame the present PHF set up. "We have Asia Cup in sight as the main target to get to the top in the region first and then move ahead. First we have to be number one in Asia," he added. "We have identified the loopholes in the team which would soon be overcame. The return of experienced players in the team would strengthen the team and the same team would be seen performing well in the coming days," he added.
