KARACHI -  Thousands of fans, supporters and friends attended the funeral prayers of singer-turned Islamic preacher Junaid Jamshed here on Thursday.

Junaid had lost his life along with 47 others in a plane crash near Havelian in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa on December 7.

Maulana Tariq Jameel led the prayers held at Moin Khan Academy, Defence Housing Authority, while the deceased was buried in the graveyard of Darululoom Korangi Karachi. People belonging to all walks of life, including prominent members of the civil society, political leaders, showbiz personalities and others attended the prayers.

Noticeable among those were Mufti Taqi Usmani, MQM-Pakistan Convener Dr Farooq Sattar, former foreign minister Khursheed Kasuri, Chief Selector Inzimamul Haq, Cricketer Mohammad Yousuf, Mohammad Hafeez, Karachi Mayor Waseem Akhter, JI Karachi chief Hafiz Naeemur Rahman, PTI MPA Khurram Sher Zaman, Faisal Wada, PSP’s Dr Sagheer Ahmed, Actor Nabeel, Ajaz Aslam, Singer Fakhir, and others.

Addressing the participants before the funeral, Maulana Tariq Jameel termed the funeral congregation one of the largest in the history of Karachi. He said that every human being has to taste the death, “And we are here to bid farewell to the soul given by Almighty Allah.”

He further said that massive gathering at the funeral proved that the deceased was a loving human being, and was loved by all. “Only few people’s funerals attract such large gatherings as Junaid’s funeral has attracted today,” he added. In a voice choked with emotions, Maulana said, “Although Junaid is no more with us but every time his name brings tears in our eyes.” “Muslims should make all possible efforts to please Allah (The Almighty) for their success in this world and the life hereafter,” he counseled. Special security arrangements had been made on the occasion as hundreds of Rangers and police personnel were deployed in the surroundings of Moin Khan Academy, while people were only allowed to enter the ground after having been frisked. Later the funeral was taken to Darul Uloom graveyard in Korangi in the shape of a procession.

Junaid Jamshed, who was born on September 3, 1964, gained nationwide and international recognition in 1987 as pop band ‘Vital Signs’ lead vocalist.

The song, ‘Dil Dil Pakistan’, topped the music charts around the country on the national TV channel.

In 2004, Junaid left both his engineering and music careers, and since then devoted himself to preaching and reciting Naats. Over the years, Jamshed gathered a massive following as a preacher while also launched a line of clothing by the name ‘JJ.’

In November 2014, Junaid was accused of blasphemy, and in December 2014, in a video message, he apologised for offending people’s sentiments and making mistakes. However, on December 7, Junaid was martyred in Pakistan International Airlines’ PK-661 flight crash that killed 47 other people as well.
