KARACHI The 2011 AIBA World Championships has been shifted to Baku, Azerbaijan, from Busan, South Korea, due to power struggle in the Korean Boxing Federation. According to information available here Thursday, the AIBA Executive Committee which met in Marrakech last week, agreed to move the venues of its 2010 Congress and 2011 World Championships due to ongoing leadership problems in the Korean Amateur Boxing Federation. The city of Busan was to host both the events. After being delegated by the executive committee to find a suitable venue for the 2011 AIBA World Championships, the AIBA president immediately contacted the Azerbaijan Boxing Federation and received the agreement to host this prestigious event. Ching Kuo Wu also of South Korea, who couple of years ago replaced Pakistans Prof Anwar Chowdhry as AIBA chief, said the World Championships was the most important event for any sport but under the given situation, the conditions were not in place to hold the event there. The event will only be able to succeed with support from a highly professional and committed local organising committee backed by both the host cities and the national host federation, he said. Azerbaijan is a leading boxing nation and has the honour of hosting a number of top-ranking events such as 2009 AIBA President Cup and 2010 AIBA Youth World Championships. The city now adds the most prestigious AIBA event to its boxing portfolio. After the Pakistani president was ousted from the AIBA some two years ago, the world body for some time showed unity of purpose but slowly cracks have started appearing in the body which functioned without differences under the Pakistani supremo. During the decade-and-a-half long rule of Anwar Chowdhdry, AIBA never faced the situation that confronts the international body now. The policy of accommodation and avoidance of confrontation pursued by Chowdhry had helped amateur boxing prosper in the world. AIBA of Chowdhry is no the same after his ouster. Anwar Chowdhry passed away here recently after prolonged illness and old age.
