PTI announces countrywide election campaign

| Party to stage grand rally in Lahore on April 29 | Core committee decides to nominate Swati as candidate for Senate opp leader | Demands Kalsoom, Dar’s resignations

ISLAMABAD - Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf Friday announced to launch countrywide election campaign from April 29 with a “grand” rally in Lahore.

The Core Committee of the party that met in Bani Gala in the chair of Imran Khan made the decision to launch election campaign from next month for the general elections, said a statement issued by the PTI’s Central Media Department.

Sharing details of the meeting, a party spokesperson stated that countrywide election campaign would be started with a grand gathering in Lahore on April 29.

Moreover, the Core Committee decided to nominate party’s Senator Azam Khan Swati as candidate for the Leader of Opposition in the Senate.  “Nomination of opposition leader in the Senate is PTI's right and till March 22 the newly-elected members have to finalise their party affiliations”, the spokesperson said. Pakistan People’s Party, the other day, had submitted nomination of Sherry Rehman as the leader of opposition with signatures of 33 senators.

The core group also raised concerns over government representative’s statements about privatisation of Pakistan International Airline and Pakistan Steel Mills. The meeting directed Dr Arif Alvi to contact unions of PIA and steel mills in this regard. Furthermore, anti-corruption cell of PTI was also directed to reveal corruption scandals in Punjab, according to the spokesperson.

The meeting made it clear that PTI would not accept privatisation of PIA and steel mills, terming it a matter of national importance. The spokesperson stated that it was a very serious matter and the PML-N should leave it to the coming government. He said that Punjab government was involved in massive corruption just like the federal government and party’s anti-corruption cell would keep a check on the development projects of Punjab.

In the meeting, the successful membership drive was lauded and central leaders were directed to visit different regions.

In a separate statement, PTI demanded resignation from Member of the National Assembly Kulsoom Nawaz, wife of former prime minister Nawaz Sharif and Senator Ishaq Dar for not being able to take oath as parliamentarian.

PTI has written to Speaker National Assembly and chairman Senate seeking resignation of Kulsoom Nawaz and Ishaq Dar. The letter written by Central Secretary Information Fawad Chaudhary stated that both Kulsoom Nawaz and Ishaq Dar had failed to fulfill legal requirements by not taking oath — a mandatory requirement for the winning candidates. “Despite the fact that Kulsoom Nawaz was battling lymphoma since the diagnosis in August, she was made to contest NA-120 by elections”, maintained Fawad Chaudhary in the letter. Chaudhary wrote that this delay in oath-taking by Kulsoom Nawaz had deprived people of NA-120 from representation.

Moreover, he added, Ishaq Dar has been elected as senator turning a blind eye to the fact that he has been declared absconder by the court. He said that such moves lose people’s confidence in democracy.

Fawad Chaudhary urged the Speaker National Assembly and Chairman Senate that either both should take oath as member of the NA and senate or resignations should be sought from them.

Praying for Kulsoom Nawaz, Fawad Chaudhry said that his party prayed for her early recovery and added that “we must also do justice with the millions of voters who are lacking representation only because of the House of Sharif’s self-will and hardheadedness.”
