Hints at protest outside CM House, Governor House, if crises are not over.
KARACHI - Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) Karachi held city-wide protest demonstrations on major arteries of the megalopolis against acute water crises and the rule of the tanker mafia, facilitated by the government, here on Friday.
People from all walks of life participated in the protest demonstrations, seeking proper water supply to the city. JI Karachi Ameer Monem Zafar addressed a protest demonstration held outside a water hydrant in the Nipa area of Karachi. Speaking on the occasion, the JI stalwart said that half of the city was deprived of water supply because of the water assault against Karachi and Karachiites by the Pakistan People Party government in Sindh.
He said that the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) was also hands in gloves with the PPP when it comes to responsibility for the prevailing water crisis. He further said both the parties will have to a answer why the K4 water supply project was in limbo as yet.
Taking the occupation mayor and the chief minister to task, Monem Zafar asked them why Karachi was deprived of basic necessity like water despite providing 96 percent tax.
He added that some two weeks ago, an 84-inch water supply line developed a leakage once again. During the past seven months, it developed leakages for six times, he added.
Further talking about the water supply projects for Karachi, he said that the JI bestow K1, K2 and K3 water supply projects to Karachi besides sewerage projects. He said that late Nematullah Khan initiated the K4 project but the MQM and the PPP never let it to be materialized. The once Rs25 billion project now costs us Rs200 billion, whereas the water share under the phase one of the project shrank from 650 million gallon water to 260 million gallon.
At one hand the project does not seem to be completed by the mid of 2026, whereas on the other hand, if the project is completed, it won’t ensure adequate water supply to Karachi. Only the tanker mafia is enjoying and taking advantage of the situation, he said, adding that instead of discouraging the mafia, the PPP government proudly announces that it earns hefty amounts of money by selling out water to Karachiites through water tankers.
