ISLAMABAD: The Supreme Court (SC) has stayed the Peshawar High Court (PHC) verdict granting sales tax exemption to people from FATA and PATA on imported goods.
When a three-member SC bench headed by Justice Gulzar Ahmad, today took up for hearing 17 petitions filed by Peshawar Commissioner revenue, Ghulam Shabbir appeared on behalf of Customs and took the plea that it has been maintained in several court’s decisions that payment of duty on import of goods was a must. Therefore, the people from FATA and PATA will have to pay all duties, including sales tax if they were importing goods. He sought a stay order against the PHC decision, which has exempted the importers from paying sales tax.
The court while issuing the stay issued notices to the parties and sought replies.
