Quake sways buildings in Punjab cities

LAHORE - Earthquake jolted parts of the province including Lahore yesterday, causing panicked people to come out of their houses while reciting verses from the Holy Quran. No loss of life or property was reported from anywhere in the province.

The tremor was measured at 4.4 on the Richter scale and its epicentre was 37 kilometres south of Lahore at 10 km depth.

Though the intensity was low, the jolts in Lahore and surrounding areas were severe due to less distance from the epicentre and merely low depth.

The earthquake also shook buildings in Nankana Sahib, Kasur, Okara, Sheikhpura, Pattoki, Pakpattan, Sahiwal and Kamoke.

Waqas Habib Rana, a resident of Lahore said the earthquake was “very intense”.

“I could hear horrific noises coming out of the ground like the earth was going to split open. I hope everyone is safe,” he said.

Mild tremors were also felt in Indian city of Amritsar on Sunday evening as an earthquake of 4.6 magnitude struck at India-Pakistan border region near Punjab.

Tremors were also felt in Fazilka and Ferozepur of Indian Punjab.
