K2 base camp gets high-speed internet connectivity; accelerates tourism promotion

In order to stimulate tourism in the moutainous area, the K2 base camp area of Concordia has been installed with a 4G BaseTransceiver Station (BTS), reported on Tuesday.

In memory of Ali Sadpara, the area has been named after him. Earlier this year, Sadpara, who was an acclaimed mountaineer went missing and lost his life owing to the winter expedition of the world's most perilous peak.
It was pertinent to take this initiative in order to provide the trekkers and mountaineers with the opportunity to have better communication facilities.

Internet access and mobile coverage will prove to be essential for the trekking and mountaineering groups as it would enable them to stay in touch with their families and would prove to be beneficial in keeping a track of them in emergency situations.

The initiative became possible by the efforts of Special Communication Organization (SCO). The efforts had been made in order to make sure that the world’s second tallest peak K2 base camp gets essential communication facilities.

In light of the government’s aim of stimulating tourism across the country, the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) and other telecom operators are aiming to focus on making the telecommunication services better, especially in the areas who possess profound tourism potential.

Prime Minister Imran Khan inaugurated the site, during his recent visit to Gilgit-Baltistan.

The initiative will prove to be beneficial in promoting adventure tourism and will ensure better weather monitoring.
