Wildlife Department foils cranes smuggling bid

LAKKI MARWAT - The employees of Wildlife Department have seized Siberian cranes from a pickup trucker near Wanda Banochi Checkpoint on Saturday.
DFO Wildlife Abdul Halim told this correspondent on phone that on credible information about the possible attempt of water birds' illegal transportation, he formed a team headed by SDFO Shahid Khan and also alerted the officials posted at Wanda Banochi Checkpoint.
He said that the wildlife workers stopped a suspected pickup trucker coming from D.I.Khan side and recovered 91 Siberian cranes from it.
Of which 13 cranes were dead while the remaining birds were shifted to the wildlife sanctuary," he maintained.
Halim said that over a dozen seized birds might die as the suffocation had badly damaged and affected them.
He claimed that the cranes were being shifted to parts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa from Wana (South Waziristan Agency. He said that cases were registered against the birds' smugglers under relevant section of Wildlife Act 2015.
