Business community happy as President quits

KARACHI/ISLAMABAD - The representatives of business community have welcomed the resignation of President Pervez Musharraf with a view that the decision would end uncertainty and improve economic condition of the country. The representatives of Federal Chamber of Commerce and Industries Pakistan (FPCCI), Karachi Chambers of Commerce and Industries (KCCI) and Korangi Association of Trade and Industries (KATI) while talking to The Nation expressed their happiness over the dramatic move of resignation of president of Pervez Musharraf. It may be mentioned here that the trade bodies of the industrialists like Federation of Pakistan Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FPCCI), Karachi Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI) and Sarhad Chamber of Commerce and Industry (SCCI) had already advised President Pervez Musharraf to step down in the best interest of the country. In a joint letter, FPCCI President Tanvir Ahmed Sheikh and leader of business community and former President of FPCCI Tariq Sayeed had said that in view of the current socio-political and economic decline, the public and legislative assemblies will join the business community in calling upon the President to step down. Zubair Tufail vice president of FPCCI said that the consensus had been developed by the coalition parties that the resignation of the President will bring political stability in the country, which is very much required for economic prosperity of the nation. Karachi Chamber President Shamim Ahmed Shamsi said that had the president contested impeachment, the economic/political crisis could have worsened with more vigour leading to complete chaos and anarchy in the country. The current situation was mainly due to political uncertainty, which had resulted in economic chaos, he believed and hoped that uncertainty will end now and government will take concrete steps for betterment of people and economic activities. Sheikh Fazal-e-Jalil chairman of Korangi Association of Trade and Industries while talking to The Nation pointed out that due to uncertain political and economic conditions, local investors were pulling out their investment and flight of capital taking place briskly. Leading industrialist of city Siraj Qasim Teli hoped that now govt will pay heed for improvement of economy of the country as black clouds of uncertainty have been vanished from the political scene. Amir Iqbal, a businessman, said that Musharraf's decision would be fruitful for the country especially for the economy. He said that we could see that after his resignation the value of rupee against dollar has increased. Sohail Tariq, another businessman, said that the economic situation of the country would be better now as the political instability is resolved. Although in Musharraf's era the foreign reserves of the country were increased but due to the unrest in the country foreign reserves are decreasing. APP adds: Executive Member Sarhad Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Zia-ul-Haq Sarhadi has termed the announcement by President Musharraf to resign from office as a welcome decision having very positive impact on the economy of the country.
