LAHORE - The 4th syndicate meeting of King Edward Medical University (KEMU) Monday has decided to present draft of the Rules & Regulations of KEMU for approval in the next meetings of the academic council and syndicate respectively. It was the first KEMU's syndicate meeting since Prof Dr Zafarullah Khan assumed charge as vice chancellor. Besides this, the syndicate has also approved budget of Rs 521 million for the financial year 2008-2009. The meeting unanimously hailed the performance of KEMU Vice Chancellor Prof Dr Zafarullah Khan and other officials of management when a report of 110-days performance of KEMU was presented before it. VC Prof Dr Zafarullakh Khan chaired the meeting while vice chancellors of Engineering University, LUMS, Dean of Punjab University, additional secretaries of the health department, finance and education department, member of Public Service Commission, Medical Superintendents of the attached hospitals including Mayo Hospital, Lady Wallington and Lady Atchison Hospital, Vice Chancellor of the KEMU, Registrar and professors also attended the meeting. It has been learnt reliably that formation of the Rules and Regulations was the top most agenda of the Syndicate's meeting, as it had been under discussion at various platforms since the KEMC was given the varsity status. The KEMU professors, doctors and paramedical staff expressed full satisfaction when it was disclosed in the meeting that Rules & Regulations have been formulated by a 12-member committee of senior professors under the supervision of the KEMU Vice Chancellor Prof Dr Zafarullah Khan. Talking to The Nation Prof Zafarullah Khan stated that soon after he assumed charge, he constituted a committee of 12 senior professors, headed by Prof Dr Sheheryar to prepare a draft for the Rules & Regulations of KEMU, which was a demand of varsity's staff. The said 12-member committee of the professors formulated and submitted draft of the Rules & Regulations, which were later given to a Law Firm (Chaudhry Law & Association) to convert it in a legal form, he added. He observed that after getting approval from the said Law Firm, the draft has been distributed again among the 12-member committee of senior doctors including five deans and seven professors of the KEMU for review with issuing instructions to the committee to present its report in this regard within 10 days. The said committee was comprised of deans including Prof Dr Zafarullah Khan, Prof Dr Azhar Hameed, Prof Dr Muhamamd Akram, Prof Dr Maaz, and Prof Dr Asad Aslam, while the professors include Dr Attia Khalid, Dr Ashraf Sultan, Dr Sheheryar, Dr Mahmood Shaukat, and others. After the approval of this draft by 12-member committee, it will be presented in the next meeting of the Academic Council for further approval then these rules will be submitted in the next Syndicate meeting, which will finally submit these Rules & Regulations to the Governor Punjab, the Chancellor of the University, for final approval. Besides this, the meeting also approved budget of Rs 13 million only for research purpose, which was reported to be highest grant approved in any medical institute of the province for research purpose. Another senior member of the Syndicate told this scribe that several other important decisions have been taken in the meeting like approval of budget of Rs 21 million for renovation and repairing of the KEMU/Mayo Hospital Building. The meeting also gave approval for the nomination of KEMU VC's name as a member of PMDC. While three professors of KEMU have been nominated as members for the meeting of Syndicate, Selection Board and Advance Study and Research Board respectively, he added.
