Save world heritage

This is with reference to a news item "Aryan gravesite discovered in Chitral" that reveals that the Department of Archaeology is engaged in excavating important archaeological sites in various districts of NWFP including Chitral. I would like to draw the attention of the Government of Pakistan, the Government of NWFP and UNESCO towards the proposal of construction of an officers' mess and guesthouse at the important archaeological site of Lakapo Dok in Mastuj, district Chitral. The site is situated on a 200 feet high mound and contains remains of a 600 BC gravesite. It may be pertinent to mention here that the NWFP government is already guilty of having constructed the building of a high school on another important archaeological site at Brep in Chitral. Noghor Dok in Brep houses remains of a 2nd century AD fort and Buddhist relics of great significance. I appeal to the government and UNESCO to save the 600 BC archaeological site of Lakapo Dok from being raised to the ground for construction of some guesthouse and officers' mess. -BASHIR HUSSAIN AZAD, Chitral, via e-mail, August 4.
