ISLAMABAD - The Senate Standing Committee on Sports has requested President Pervez Musharraf and Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gillani to take up the issue of Test cricketer Muhammad Asif at official level to bring him back in country. The House met on Wednesday at Parliament House with Senator Zafar Iqbal Choudhary in chair and it expressed satisfaction over the improvement in the accounts of Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) and hailed the performance of national team in the recently concluded tri-nation cricket tournament in which Pakistan thrashed traditional rival India in the final to lift the title in Bangladesh. In his closing remarks, Senator Zafar Iqbal Choudhary said that high ups should play their role for releasing Muhammad Asif from Dubai, who had been arrested on June 1 on the allegation of have banned substance in his wallet. "The heads of state should try to bring Muhammad Asif back to country and trial him under Pakistan laws," he repeatedly said at the concluding of meeting. Earlier, Senator Enver Baig from Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) observed that the PCB should not help Asif because his act humiliated whole nation and he must be penalised. Meanwhile, Senator Haroon Akhter Khan said that the both PCB and government must try to release Asif because he was after all a national hero. Dr. Nasim Ashraf, chairman PCB briefed members of the House regarding Asif's cause and said that Dubai authorities did not fix any charge on fast bowler. "Also, the PCB did not get any official information so far from the Dubai authorities about Asif's issue. We have hired a well-known legal company to support pacer and that is in contact with him, "he added.While debating on the other issues, Senator Enver Baig said that the board was making heavy investments but the national team did not show any remarkable performance in the international competitions. Nasim said that PCB was focusing on long term plans. "We have succeeded in originating a talented cricket team that will move up in the international ranking and Pakistan will be in top three teams of the world during a couple of years. We were at 8th position in the last World Cup Cricket and we improved our ranking and at present we are spotted at 5th place, "he viewed.
