A Chinese automobile company has pledged to install electric vehicle (EV) charging stations across Sindh, Sindh Information and Transport Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon announced during an official visit to China.

Speaking from the headquarters of Chinese automaker Chery in Wuhu, Memon, accompanied by Sindh Energy Minister Syed Nasir Hussain Shah, said EV charging points will be established every 50 kilometers across all districts of Sindh.

“Our vision is to promote eco-friendly transportation through electric vehicles,” Memon stated. “This initiative will not only support green mobility but also create new employment opportunities for the people of Sindh.”

Memon also disclosed plans to set up an EV mini-truck assembly plant in Karachi, aimed at making electric vehicles more affordable and accessible for the general public.

Meanwhile, Energy Minister Nasir Shah highlighted growing Chinese cooperation in the solar energy sector. “Solar systems are being distributed to low-income households to ease their electricity burden,” he said, emphasizing the government’s focus on household solarization to combat high power costs.

In a related development, the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) has approved a reduction in the electric vehicle charging tariff from Rs 45.55 to Rs 23.57 per unit, following a request by the federal government. NEPRA has also approved the removal of the capped margin of Rs 24.44 on vehicle charging stations.

The tariff reduction is expected to further encourage the use of electric vehicles across the country.
