Sindh has significant water and infectious diseases issues with the current flood situation. Infectious diseases are already becoming an endemic in the worst affected districts. Every year thousands of diarrhea and other waterborne diseases resulting from polluted and contaminated water are reported from the said districts. However, the ongoing monsoon rain water, which has mixed with the raw sewage, and with the non availability of clean drinking water in the areas, the outbreaks of diseases is adding to the heavy toll of misery for these people. It is reported that the ill-fated victims have contracted various diseases such as cholera, dysentery, gastroenteritis, malaria, whooping cough, Typhoid and Paratyphoid fever, Leptospirosis, skin and eye infections. To cope with these growing diseases cooperation between the public and private organizations is required. Unfortunately neither the individuals nor the relevant organisations are taking any preventative action to deal with such disasters. These harsh times for the poor disaster hit people of Sindh, Balochistan and Punjab districts appeal to the concerned national and international organisations to provide maximum medical supplies and skilled personnel to disaster areas to save the lives of millions of victims.HASHIM ABRO, Islamabad, September 17.
