The federal government on Tuesday promoted Chief of Army Staff (COAS) General Syed Asim Munir to the rank of Field Marshal, recognising his exceptional leadership during Operation Bunyan-un-Mursoos.
The decision was made during a federal cabinet meeting chaired by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif.
The cabinet also approved an extension in the service of Air Chief Marshal Zaheer Ahmed Babar Sidhu as he nears the end of his term.
Prime Minister Sharif congratulated the nation on the success of Operation Bunyan-un-Mursoos, conducted during the recent conflict referred to as Marka-e-Haq (Battle for Truth). The operation, launched in response to India's unprovoked aggression on the night of May 6 and 7, 2025, was credited with thwarting hostile designs and safeguarding Pakistan’s sovereignty.
Acknowledging the strategic brilliance and courageous leadership of Gen Munir during this critical period, the cabinet unanimously approved his elevation to the prestigious rank of Field Marshal. His leadership was praised for effectively guiding military operations and ensuring national defence under extraordinary circumstances.
The cabinet strongly condemned India's attack, particularly the targeting of civilians, including women and children, and its blatant violations of Pakistan’s territorial integrity.
Prime Minister Sharif also briefed President Asif Ali Zardari on the cabinet’s decision, ensuring alignment at the highest level of state leadership.
Additionally, the cabinet decided to honour Pakistan Armed Forces personnel and civilians who played key roles during Operation Bunyan-un-Mursoos.
Top state awards will be conferred in recognition of their courage, service, and contribution to national defence.
