Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi headed to Washington to convey Pakistani reservations over the objectionable provisions of the infamous Kerry-Lugar Bill to the US Administration. What did he succeed in securing? Only an expositional document that, notwithstanding the historic' description by our worthy FM, binds neither the present Obama administration nor any future government of United States to the word of it. Given its insubstantial status, my humble opinion is that the prize with which Mr. Qureshi has returned from his most recent trip to America is nothing more than a lollipop that actually mocks the intelligence of the Pakistani nation. Logically speaking, the only explanation for accepting this document can be that the Pakistani army, media, Foreign Ministry and the public, more than anything else, need tutoring in the most basic of English language skills, reading and comprehension After all, their understanding of the Kerry-Lugar document must have been grossly erroneous for them to have formed an opinion so contrary to that of messrs. Kerry and Lugar. Now that the right meaning has been communicated through a lesson in comprehension, they should stop complaining at once and start gloating over this 'historic' achievement. Of course, Pakistan's sovereignty should not be so fragile to be impaired by passage of a bill by the legislature of another country. But it should be clear to us all that sovereignty of Pakistan would be diluted for sure by acceptance of donation from a country that regularly and wantonly violates our airspace to kill our citizens on our territory. In my opinion, it is imperative that we thank the Obama administration very politely for America's thoughtful gesture of generosity but decline this charitable offer irrespective of the terms attendant thereto. -SALMAN MAHMOOD, Qatar, October 17.
