6,000 KWSB employees restored after being fired

KARACHI - In a dramatic move on Friday, the Sindh Local Bodies' Ministry took back its earlier decision to fire around 6,000 freshly recruited employees of the KWSB. The Sindh government had issued a notification of their termination on Friday, however after few hours on the same day, they took back their earlier decision and restored the freshly recruited employees in the KWSB. MD KWSB, Suleman Chandio, on Friday night confirmed that according to the latest development on the directives of Provincial Local Bodies Minister, Aga SiraJ Durrani, cancellation orders of the provincial government against fresh appointments of around 6,000 employees have been withheld and now all them have been restored on their jobs. Panic spread among the KWSB employees when private TV channels broke the news of their termination. But later efforts started in the political circles to restore them, which later prove successful. Earlier, Sindh government fired around 6,000 employees of Karachi Water and Sewerage Board (KWSB) who had been recruited during under caretaker government. Informed sources said the KWSB administration had received a copy of notification from the office of Local Government issued on Friday stating that fresh recruitments in the KWSB, conducted from 19-11 2007 to 8-4-2008 have been cancelled with immediate effect. The recruitments mostly included small cadre employees but some of them were also appointed at grades.   When contacted, Director Human Resources KWSB, Akhlaq Ahmed, was not available for comments while other high-ups had also switched off their cell phones. Sources in the Sindh government said that the decision to this effect was taken in the light of a provincial cabinet meeting held on 13th April that appointments and recruitments in various departments did not come under the purview of the caretaker regime and the new government would review this matter. It also may be noted that according to the Election Commission Rules that job of caretaker government was only to conduct transparent election not the other matters. Meanwhile around 150 officers and staffers of the KWSB, who got promotions through lobbying and different sources under the caretaker regime, have been demoted few days back. All of them were promoted during the tenure of the interim government. High-ups in the KWSB, when contacted, confirmed that dozens of officers and staffers have been demoted adding that majority of the affected officials belonged to grade 14, grade 16, grade 17 and grade 18. They all jumped to the above grades few months back but now they have been demoted to their old grades, KWSB competent authorities said. The KWSB, which has been made bone of contention between Sindh government and the CDGK for the past few weeks, is facing financial crisis and since the body comes under the Local Govt, differences between CDGK and Sindh government on various occasions came on the surface. KWSB authorities were of view that promotions were given to the KBCA officers and staffers on the basis of personal liking and disliking as well as on lobbying and political connections. Meanwhile, contract of KWSB adviser (Finance), M. Ayub, has also been cancelled.
