ISLAMABAD Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani renamed Islamabad International Airport as Benazir Bhutto International Airport, Islamabad as a mark of respect and recognition of her services for the country and democracy on the occasion of her 55th birth anniversary falling today (June 21). The Prime Minister also changed the name of Rawalpindi General Hospital, where Shaheed Benazir Bhutto had breath her last and Murree Road after Benazir Bhutto in consultation with the Government of Punjab. The Prime Minister had given an initial grant of Rs 50 million for upgradation of the Hospital. The Prime Minister had further decided to build a monument at the site in Rawalpindi where Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto was assassinated. The design of this monument would be selected through open international competition. Premier Gilani had also granted 90 days special remission to the prisoners convicted for life imprisonment except those convicted for murder, espionage, anti-state activities, sectarianism, Zina, robbery, dacoity, kidnapping/abduction and terrorist acts and 45 days special remission to all other convicts except the condemned prisoners, convicted of murder, espionage subversion, anti-state activities, terrorist acts, on the occasion. The two remissions would be admissible provided the convicts had undergone two-thirds of their substantive sentence of imprisonment. Total remission has been given to male prisoners, who are 65 years of age or above and have undergone at least one-third of their substantive sentence of imprisonment, except those involved in culpable homicide and those involved in terrorist acts. Total remission has also been given to female prisoners, who are 60 years of age or above and have undergone at least one-third of their sentence of imprisonment, except those involved in culpable homicide and those involved in terrorist acts. Special remission of one year would be given to female prisoners who were accompanying children and were serving sentence of imprisonment for crimes other than culpable homicide and those involved in terrorist acts. Total remission has been given to juvenile convicts (under 18 years of age) who have served one-third of their substantive sentence except those involved in culpable homicide, terrorist acts, as defined in the Anti-Terrorism (Second Sec. 10 offence of Zina (Enforcement of Hudood) Ord. 1979. Meanwhile, Pakistan People Party (PPP) Chairperson Shaheed Mohatarma Benazir Bhutto's 55th Birthday would be observed today (Saturday) with utmost reverence and simplicity. The events to be held throughout the country would be marked with simplicity and no funfair and cake cutting would be done as it was the first birthday of Late Bhutto after her Shahadat(martyrdom). The day would dawn with special prayers for Shaheed Benazir Bhutto, who was martyred on December 27 in Rawalpindi, while Quran Khawani would be held at all the big cities, Divisional, District and Local levels to mark the day. Large-scale portraits of Shaheed Mohtarma garlanded and lit with candlelight would be the common feature at all the party offices in the length and breadth of the country where Quran Khawani would be done for the departed soul. The Party leaders and workers would donate blood on the day at special camps to be set up for the purpose to pay their respect to their leader. The main function would be held at the famous Liaquat Bagh at 6:00pm in Rawalpindi where PPP activists, Members of the Ruling Party and others would gather to pay homage to their leader who had laid down her life at the same place on December 27, 2007 for the cause of democracy and better future of the people of Pakistan. The event at Rawalpindi was being organized by Pakistan Peoples Party Rawalpindi in the supervision of City President, Zamrud Khan. The party leaders and activists had started gathering at Liaquat Bagh on Friday night and they would stay at the place for the whole night to pay homage to their great leader.
