PM forms body to implement PCB constitution

ISLAMABAD - Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani Friday directed Federal Minister for Sports Pir Aftab Shah Jilani Friday to form an implementation committee to look after the enforcement of the new constitution of Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) after its approval from President Asif Ali Zardari. Federal Minister for Sports Aftab Shah Jillani called on Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani here on Friday at Prime Minster House and gave a detailed briefing about the current circumstances of the sports activities in the country. The Lahore incident also came under discussion in the meeting. After the meeting, Jilani told The Nation that he had good chat with the Prime Minister and he gave details regarding the sports of the country. "I also told the prime minister that the PCB's constitution has been sent to president who is also patron-in-chief of the PCB for its final approval. It will be applied soon after its approval," he added. He said that the PM advised him to set-up an implementation committee soon after its approval and run the affairs of the PCB according to constitution. "The Prime Minister assured us to fully support the uplifting sports in the country. The government will financially help the ministry in the situation. The national image has been seriously damaged by the Lahore incident that took lives of the seven people and Sri Lankan players got injuries, "he said. "The Prime Minister is keen on the resumption of international sports events in Pakistan and he also wants to raise the sports in the country and he said that the government will give priority to sports as Pakistan's image could be built through sports across the world. He promised me to visit the Ministry very soon," Jilani added. Jilani termed as encouraging the statement of Sri Lankan player Samarvere in which he said that he was ready to play in Pakistan in near future. "I thank Samaravere on his high spirit of sportsman, "he said. It is pertinent to mention here that the current constitution of the board was executed under Chairman PCB Nasim Ashraf, as pressure was exerted by Senate Standing Committee. Later, a committee was formulated to review the constitution of PCB under the control of Law Minister Farooq H Naik. The committee made some amendments in the constitution and slashed the powers of chairman PCB and included the role of Ministry of Sports. ABDUL JABBAR FAISAL
