NA panel directs FIA to trace out culprits

Negative campaign against Gulalai on social media

islamabad - The National Assembly Standing Committee on Rules of Procedure and Privileges yesterday directed the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) to trace out persons who have been maligning lawmaker Ayesha Gulalai on social media.

After considering the question of the parliamentarian, the committee directed the DG FIA to investigate and find out those who are spreading disinformation or false news against the honourable parliamentarians.

The FIA was further directed to take appropriate action and report to the committee within thirty days.

The video of PTI parliamentarian elected on a reserved seat became viral when some PTI activists misbehaved with the woman parliamentarian.

On one of her Facebook accounts she wrote that she has submitted privilege motion in National Assembly about malicious and baseless propaganda against her on social media on August 21.

According to sources, the FIA may register a case under new Cyber Crime Law after initial investigation.

Discussing the question of privileges raised by Ghulam Sarwar Khan and Shazia Marri, MNAs, the committee expressed its displeasure on the policies of banks for not issuing credit cards and loans to the parliamentarians and directed the secretary ministry of finance and governor State Bank of Pakistan to submit a report of the cases relating to the rejections or refusal of applications of credit cards or loans to the parliamentarians, civil servants and lieutenant generals within fifteen days.

Khan questioned the non-provision of loans by financial institutions and Private Banks to the members, while Marri raised the issue of non-issuance of credit cards to lawmakers.

On the question of privilege of MNA Dr Shireen Mehrunnisa Mazari, the chairman expunged the un-parliamentary words used by mover against the additional secretary, ministry of water and power and managing director PEPCO.

The secretary water and power was directed to ensure his attendance in the next meeting of the committee in person. The committee expressed its displeasure against the attitude of additional secretary/MD PEPCO for leaving the committee room during the course of discussion and directed to obtain views of ministry of law and justice regarding the question of privilege.

On the question of Ch Bilal Ahmed Virk, the CEO PIAC was directed to provide video recording pertaining to the issue of theft of valuable things of the member in the next meeting of the committee.
