Shahbaz takes strict notice of kidnapping incidents

LAHORE-Punjab Chief Minister Mian Mohammad Shahbaz Sharif has taken strict notice of the incidents of kidnapping for ransom in the province and directed Inspector General Police to purchase necessary equipment for tracing phone calls as well as take immediate action against the criminals involved in such cases. Presiding over a high level meeting at Chief Minister's Secretariat, here on Monday, the CM warned that incidents of kidnapping for ransom will not be tolerated and Police should accept the challenge of curbing this menace. He directed IG Punjab to set up a special cell under his supervision to curb the incidents of kidnapping for ransom. He said that the cell should comprise highly professional and competent police officers and submit its report directly to the IG. He further directed that special task force set up for this purpose should also remain alert. The Chief Minister was informed that mobile phones are used for making ransom demands in such cases but Punjab Police does not have required machinery for tracing these phone calls. The Chief Minister directed IG Police to immediately purchase latest machinery for tracing phone calls and expressed his surprise over the fact that this machinery is already not available to Punjab Police. He said that how the funds provided to the police have been spent if these have not been utilized on the improvement of matters of fundamental nature, purchase of modern machinery for eradication of crime, provision of technical facilities to the police force or betterment of prevalent conditions in police stations. He directed IG Police to arrange training of concerned staff of Punjab police from intelligence agencies. The Chief Minister also directed Law Minster Punjab to conduct a meeting of the sub-committee set up for curbing heinous crime on daily basis whereas he will himself convene a high level meeting on weekly basis to review police performance. IG Police informed the Chief Minister that in 88 per cent cases of kidnapping for ransom during the last two months, 31 abductees have been got released whereas 65 kidnappers including two women have been arrested. Teams to monitor work of drug inspectors DCO Sajjad Ahmed Bhutta has said that the special team would monitor the performance of drug inspectors and strict action would be taken against those involved in improper attitude with the medical stores. He was chairing a meeting of District Quality Control Board here on Monday. 11 cases were presented before the DQCB, out of which seven were sent to the drug court while the remaining were deferred until next meeting. Sajjad Ahmed Bhutta directed Secretary DQCB Dastgir Ahmed Bhatti to launch crackdown against major stores and ensure indiscriminate implementation of drug act.
