Time to revisit linguistics to meet post-pandemic challenges

MULTAN    -   Experts from home and abroad have highlighted the need for revisiting the linguistics discipline to meet the challenges of the post-pandemic world, at a webinar organized by Islamia University Bahawalpur (IUB).


“As humanity continues to struggle with the complex realities of life in the post-pandemic world, there is a need to revisit the linguistics, its issues, trends and methodologies”, says a statement issued by the IUB.


The one-day literary interaction titled ‘21st Century Issues, Methods & Trends in Linguistics’ was held the other day under the patronage of IUB Vice Chancellor Engr Prof. Dr Athar Mahboob (T.I),  and Prof. Dr Jawed Hassan Chandio, Dean Faculty of Arts and Languages, IUB.


The initiative was intended to search for advances in theory and practice of the field of Linguistics.


In newer socio-global situations and unprecedented challenges of the present times, connecting with experts across the globe updated their fund of knowledge, said the VC.


The field of linguistics owned a versatility through its multi-disciplinary connections and hence puts a great demand for research in the background of a new fragile world.


The VC underlined the importance of the discipline and its wider role and multidisciplinary nature in the domains of humanities and social sciences.


He said that the conference provided brilliant opportunity for the students and faculty to learn and interact with renowned linguistics and academicians.


The recommendations of the conference included that Skills for Corpus development should be imparted on researchers. In addition, language skills should be seen holistically in terms of their connection with mathematical and reasoning skills.


Furthermore, the experts recommended that real-world english should be introduced into English language classrooms through collaborative measures and strategies.


They said that the research tools and findings before the pandemic might not remain relevant amidst new challenges.


Experts of research and linguistics from twelve national and international universities suggested some solutions for the issues in line with modern ways of teaching.


The participants included Dr Ali Karakas from department of foreign language education of Mehmet Akif Ersoy University Burdur (Turkey), Dr Muhammad Hilmi Bin Hamza from University of Utara Malaysia, Jessica Anderson from University of Nebraska, Omaha (USA), Dr Yusuf Emre Yesilyurt from Mehmet Akif Ersoy University Burdur (Turkey), Dr Huma Akram from Northeast Normal University (China), Dr Shazia Ayyaz from Kinnaird College for Women University, Dr Ammara Farukh from University of Education, Lahore, Dr Arshad Ali from NUML Multan, Dr Adnan Tahir from Emerson University College Multan, Dr Faraz Ali Bughio from university of Science & Technology, Botswana, Dr Rukaiza Khan from NUST Islamabad, Dr Shazia Riaz Dar from Gift University, Gujranwala, and Dr Uzma Anjum from Air University Islamabad.


They shared views on changing trends in linguistics including discourse analysis, mathematics & language skills, EFL teaching & learning, thematic analysis, corpus linguistics and research methodology.


Dr Riaz Hussain, head department of english linguistics was the focal person, Dr Shahid Nawaz, assistant professor served as conference secretary, while  Muhammad Ali Zamir, Muhammad Ramzan, Omer Saleem, Samreen Anjum, Ezza Shakil, Maria Saleem, Amna Mushtaq, Maria Rasheed and Uzma Joiya acted as coordinators.


Prof. Dr Jawed Hassaan Chandio lauded the hard work of the organizers, the IUB faculty of linguistics, for successfully holding the 4th International linguistics conference.
