SIALKOT - Terming it a ‘precious gift’, Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif yesterday laid the foundation stone of Sialkot-Lahore Motorway.

Addressing the public, he said 89-km project would be completed in two years under the joint supervision of Frontier Works Organization (FWO) and National Highway Authority (NHA). Nawaz said this motorway would save travel time between Sialkot and Lahore.

He said the mega project would bring about economic change in the Golden Export Triangle –Sialkot, Gujrat and Gujranwala. The PM said three industrial zones, two universities, nine flyovers, seven interchanges, 26 small and big bridges and 34 underpasses would also be built along Sialkot-Lahore Motorway. Without mentioning the names of PTI and PAT leaders, the PML-N chief took a swipe at the politicians ‘doing politics of protest for nothing’.

“The elements busy with container politics has been creating hurdles to national peace and prosperity,” he said and urged the people to make the difference. He went on to say: “We have also on a container but it has no resemblance with their politics. Ours is a container of prosperity and progress whereas their containers represent stalemate.”

“Those elements were given mandate to stage protests whereas the government enjoyed the mandate to construct motorways. They wanted to let the country’s youth down, but the PML-N government would not allow such elements to halt the progress,” the PM said.

Pledging to end public deprivation in a couple of years, Nawaz said a number of power and infrastructure projects would be completed in the next two years.  He announced 2018 would be the year of end to loadshedding of electricity. He claimed that his government brought betterment to Pakistan Railways, Pakistan International Airlines (PIA). He announced PIA premier flights would soon be launched from Sialkot.

Nawaz said that the mega project of China Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) was a gate of prosperity, which would bring in the economic revolution.

The PM added that the PML-N government was spreading the nets of roads and motorways across Pakistan for providing the better means of communication to the masses all over the Pakistan. He said the PML-N would also win the next elections on the basis of performance. Nawaz also announced the early reconstruction and dualisation of dilapidating main Daska-Pasrur Road and main Sialkot-Pasrur Road.

Reiterated the anti terror resolve, PM Nawaz said the nation stand firm against terrorism. He praised the servicemen for bravely battling the terrorists. He said the Operation Zarb-e-Azb was bearing fruit.

Defence Minister Kh Asif, lawmakers, Sialkot-based exporters , PML-N leaders  and senior officials of Frontier Works Organization (FWO) and National Highway Authority (NHA) were also present.

FWO DG Major General Muhammad Afzal briefed the prime minister about the project. The motorway would begin at the Lahore bypass interchange on N-5 which would also connect it to the M-2 near Kala Shah Kaku. It would end around 15 km west of Sialkot. Flanked by his key ministers and FWO DG Major General Muhammad Afzal unveiled the plaque.
