Rawalpindi - Police booked as many as 70 persons on terrorism charges when they attacked Pirwadhai police station and resorted to aerial firing to obtain release of a proclaimed offender, said police.

Police also rounded up at least 8 persons while raids are being conducted to arrest the other accused, police added.

According to Station House Officer Chaudhry Riaz, a police team carried out a raid on the house of proclaimed offender Atif Billa in Fauji Colony and arrested him. The accused was wanted by police in several cases of murder, attempted murder and dacoities, he said. As police brought the accused to the police station, Chaudhry Riaz said, more than 50 people gathered outside the police station and started pelting stones and glass bottles at the building, besides resorting to indiscriminate firing. The mob also blocked the road for traffic, the SHO said. Police retaliated and baton charged the mob, he said.

Some attackers were arrested by police whereas many others managed to escape from the scene, Riaz informed. Taking action, police lodged a case against the attackers under sections of 324/395/353/186/341/127/149 of Pakistan Penal Code and 7 (Anti-Terrorism Act), he said.

However, the SHO refused to share the numbers of arrested accused.

A source disclosed that police had arrested some 8 attackers. SP Malik Muhammad Iqbal was not available for his comments.
