Karachi (PPI) - Advisor to Sindh Chief Minister Sharmila Faruqui Wednesday visited different areas of the city to take stock of the post-rain situation and noted with concern that the main cause of flooding was the illegal encroachments along the storm water drains. The drains could not be cleaned owing to encroachments with the result that the rainwater starts overflowing and submerging the city areas and creating ponds of stagnant water instead of draining out. This again causes spread of water-borne diseases, she said. On receiving complaints by the local people that the police and officials of city government patronize the encroachers, Ms. Faruqui appealed the City Nazim to initiate effective action for removing illegal encroachments in the surroundings of drains. She assured to submit recommendations for to the concerned authorities for taking strict action against police and other officials. Meanwhile, expressing grief over the death of several people in building collapse in Liaquatabad last night, she said that illegal constructions were underway under the patronage of police and building control authority and stressed for taking effective action to stop such constructions. Sharmila said the builders should be made bound to ensure parking lots at every housing scheme as the people use to park vehicles outside at the roads.
