Call to enhance Pak-Afghan trade


PESHAWAR : Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KPCCI) President Zahidullah Shinwari has stressed the need for removal of impediments to give further boost to bilateral trade relations between Pakistan and Afghanistan.

He stated this while talking to Afghan Consul General Moeen Marsyal during his visit to Consulate in Peshawar on Wednesday. On the occasion, the officials of Afghan consulate were also present. He said the enhancement of mutual trade between Pakistan and Afghanistan is best interest of the both neighbouring countries.

He informed that the bilateral trade and Afghan transit trade have affected due to some issues between governments of Pakistan and Afghanistan.

He said the imposition of regulatory duties on more than 731 imported items, by government of Pakistan, was raised at appropriate forum, and they contacted with the Ministry of Commerce and Federal Board of Revenue along with other relevant authorities.

Shinwari said the business community has suffered due to new Afghan transit trade agreement between Pakistan and Afghanistan. He said they had conveyed their reservations on the new ATTA to the government of Pakistan.

He said the rapid decline in trade volume between the two neighbouring countries is harmful for business community as well as to their economy. He said the chamber has identified issues, which are hampering trade between Pakistan and Afghanistan, and also several proposals were put before the government of Pakistan for their amicable resolution. Therefore, he urged the Afghan Consulate to identify issues and to raise them with Afghan government in order to remove hurdle in way of bilateral trade and Pak-Afghan transit trade to give further boost to mutual trade and business relations between the two neighbouring countries.

He informed that a high-level delegation of the Sarhad Chamber of Commerce and Industry will hold meeting with the incumbent Afghan ambassador to Islamabad shortly, and to raise issues of business community both sides of the border.

On the occasion, the Afghan envoy has agreed with the all proposals and reservations of president of KPCCI Zahid Shinwari on bilateral trade and ATTA. He assured that he will take up them with the government of Afghanistan, and would play effective role for their amicable resolution. He also mentioned about the issues and problems being faced by Afghan exporters and urged the Sarhad chamber chief to highlight these issues with government and relevant authorities.
