LAHORE - Punjab Chief Minister, Shahbaz Sharif has said that a special committee comprising educationists and Secretary Higher Education would be constituted for fixation of educational standard of students and for this purpose a regular Talent Endowment Scheme is being introduced. He expressed these views while addressing prize distribution ceremony of position holders of BA and BSc examination at Punjab University New Campus on Saturday. Members National and Provincial Assembly, teachers, students and their parents were also present on the occasion. The chief minister said that without the promotion of education, Pakistan can neither be put on road to progress nor can compete with other developed nations. He said that government would utilize all out resources for the promotion of education in the province. He said that if position holders of BA and BSc examinations want to study at local level or abroad for getting PhD degree beside post graduation, Punjab government will bear all their educational expenditures. He said that Punjab University is an old and great educational institution of the subcontinent but only 70 to 75 students get their degree in PhD annually while this number in neighbouring countries is nearly 60,000. He said even if it is compared with regard to population, this number should be 500 in Punjab. The chief minister while addressing the ceremony said that every sector, including education was deteriorated because of wrong fixation of priorities for development of various sectors and wastage of resources by the former governments, as well as discrepancy in the acts and deeds of the politicians. He said that 30 years of marshal-law was also the main cause of our backwardness during which cruelties were made and institutions were ruined. He said that our land is very fertile and had produced prominent scientists, doctors, engineers and teachers but we did not benefit from this land in real sense, which was a criminal act. He said that other nations had chosen the right dimension for development and therefore they have made great progress in every sector. While quoting the example of Germany, the chief minister said that it was ruined after Second World War but its people were not disappointed and made progress in every sector by their hard work. He said that examples of China, Singapore, Japan and Bangladesh were in front of us. Shahbaz Sharif said he believes that if we decided to put our country on the road to progress, the vistas of development will continue to be opened automatically and we will achieve our lost glory but honesty, hardworking and dedication was necessary in this regard. The chief minister said that as 'Servant' he has visited far-flung areas of the province where he also inspected primary schools and witnessed that their condition was deplorable. Where the foreign aid received during last eight years was utilized, he questioned? He said that not only the former rulers looted the national resources ruthlessly but also constructed palatial secretariat but we will have to utilize national resources with honesty and spend all the resources for the promotion of education, as had been done by other developed nations. He said that effective measures have been taken by the present government for the uplift of education and model schools are being set up at teshil level at a cost of three billion rupees while computer labs are also being established in more than four thousand high schools with the cost of four billion rupees. He said that steps are being taken for the uplift of other sectors beside education. He said that salaries of judges of subordinate courts have been increased three times for which an additional budget of one billion rupees has to be allocated so that talented, honest and hard working judges should join this sector for ensuring timely justice to the masses. He said that Punjab Govt wanted to improve the standard of all the colleges and universities of the province. He said that VC Punjab University should prepare comprehensive recommendations in this regard and Punjab govt will extend all out support for the betterment of Punjab University.
