KARACHI-Lyari Town SSP Raja Omar Khattab sustained minor injuries in a bomb attack on him near Saddar police station, located at Shahrah-e-Faisal area on Saturday. Some of the high police officials suspected that the banned outfits might be behind the attempt to kill him. The bomb was planted in a bicycle parked in Saddar Police Lines at main Sharah-i-Faisal, where his residence is located, adding, that the explosion occurred outside the residence of Khattab, when he was on his way to the office. Bomb Disposal Squad (BDS) teams reached the spot for inquiry, while the ambulances of different welfare organisations also reached there to take the victims to the hospital. The BDS officials said that the bomb was planted in a bicycle that was parked alongside the road, adding, that almost two kg explosives were used in the attack. Police further said that SSP Khattab was the target of the bomb who suffered minor injuries while a pedestrian named Shahid was also injured. The wounded were taken to Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Center on police mobile unit of Khattab's squad and then Khattab was shifted to Aga Khan Hospital. Almost five vehicles including the jeep of Khattab were damaged in the blast. SSP Khattab, who had served as SSP Crime Investigation Department (CID), before taking the charge as TPO Lyari Town, had spent more than five years in Police Intelligence Department and played an active role in drive against banned-organisations in the City. Some of the high police officials suspected that one of the banned outfits might be the behind the bomb attack. The officials said that this explosive had the range for hitting almost one-and-a-half to two kilometers. The explosion occurred by remote control device and it was locally made bomb. The bomb was planted between the chain cover of the bicycle. The blast caused a ditch measuring 2 to 4 feet wide and one feet deep. The FTC building was also affected by the blast as its mirrors were damaged, nobody saw who parked the bicycle there. The people, who were present on the spot when the incident took place told that there was no bicycle until we saw there almost five to 10 minutes ago. They further said that when the incident took place many people including the police , innocent citizens, children and women were present there, but they were luckily saved from the impact of the blast in that area.
