LG system to stay, says federal minister

KARACHI (APP) - Federal Local Government Minister, Justice (Rtd) Abdul Razaq Thahim has said that local government system will continue to stay and Provincial governments can appoint Administrators after December 31, 2009 which is the authority of provinces. Talking to journalists after reviewing the development schemes of assembly members at Municipal Training and Research Institute here Monday, the Minister said it is the consensus of provinces that under obtaining law and order conditions, local government elections are not possible. The Federal Minister said that record development works have been carried out all over the country and the centre provided funds for mega projects. Replying a question about future of LG system, he affirmed that it will stay. However, it could be amended. He said under Local Government Ordinance, it is a provincial subjects and the provinces would be authorised to appoint Administrator after December 31, 2009. He said if the President signed the summary regarding local government system before December 31, the Administrators could be appointed forthwith. Earlier, in the meeting the representatives of SSGC, WAPDA, HESCO and other departments gave a detail briefing to the Minister about various development projects. Justice Razaq Thahim directed them to expedite the pace of work on the schemes in hand. Action against encroachments Acting Nazim Shah Faisal Town, Irtiza Farooqui has directed that encroachments and illegal parking be strictly banned around all roads, markets, shopping centres and residential projects. During a visit to various areas and while talking to people, the Town Nazim asked the officials of anti-encroachment cell to protect the people from security concerns with public coooperation and also save them from traffic hazards. He pointed out that on the occasion of Eid-ul-Azha volunteers would be on duty at all markets, shopping centres and on roads while strict security will be maintained.
