LAKKI MARWAT/KHYBER AGENCY - A bomber was killed when the suicide vest he was wearing detonated in an exchange of fire with a police party in Baghban area of Lakki Marwat late on Friday evening. According to DPO Muhammad Idrees, the bomber was trying to sneak into Sayyedan locality, where a Muharram congregation was in progress, when the trade of fire took place. The attacker pulled his pistol and opened fire at law enforcers deputed at a checkpoint at the entrance to Sayyedan locality, a neighbourhood mostly populated by the Shia community. As the attack was repulsed, the bomber, evidently a teenager, in a bid to escape lobbed a hand grenade but got killed when his suicide jacket went off, added DPO Idrees. Witnesses said his body parts scattered across the congested lane where he had been stuck during the course of the showdown. Also, main gate of a house was partially damaged in the explosion that triggered panic in the area. Referring to a ‘majlis’ going on at the residence of Syed Zahoor Abbas Shaj Afgar Bukhari, a prominent Shia leader, at the time of the explosion, DPO Idrees said had the bomber reached his target, destruction would have been immense. He said that timely action by the police foiled the terror attempt and saved precious lives. Sources, however, said that the intended attack was timed with Isha prayers. After the incident, a massive contingent of police cordoned off the area and started collecting evidence from the site.In Khyber Agency, three gunmen of a local militia were killed and two others injured in a bombing and a clash in separate incidents. The first incident took place in Takhtakai area of Tirah valley, where three volunteers of a peace militia were killed when an explosive device planted by the side of a road exploded. Sources said the militiamen were returning back after offering Friday prayer when they were hit by the bomb. The victims were identified as Waris Khan, Yar Aman and Zar Nabi.Meanwhile, two fighters of a peace militia, identified as Abdul Wahid and Akhtar Amin, sustained bullets in a clash with Lashkar-e-Islam volunteers in Katakanri area of Zakha Khel in Landi Kotal tehsil. Late on Thursday night, sources said, dozens of Mangal Bagh-led LI gunmen attacked Marozai checkpost, which was being controlled by a local militia. Although the attackers got hold of the checkpoint, it was recaptured by the local militia after a few hours.
