RAWALPINDI - A three-day Autumn Festival concluded at Pir Mehr Ali Shah Arid Agriculture University Rawalpindi (PMAS-AAUR) here on Friday.

A prize distribution ceremony was also held in which Dr Riaz Hussain Qureshi, Advisor, Human Resource Development (HRD), Higher Education Commission (HEC), Islamabad was the chief guest. PMAS-AAUR Vice Chancellor (VC) Prof Dr Muhammad Azim Malik and other faculty members were also present on the occasion.

Addressing the ceremony, Dr Riaz Hussain Qureshi said that that it was indeed commendable that PMAS-AAUR has organized such a wonderful event on their own in order to increase awareness among the people regarding the significance of plants and flowers.

He said that apart from beautification, flowers and roses were a great source of recreation and entertainment for the people and such exhibitions encourage people for plantation of flowers at their homes.

The chief guest also visited the show and appreciated the floral arrangements of different organizations participated in the three-day event.

Earlier, PMAS-AAUR Vice Chancellor (VC) Prof Dr Muhammad Azim Malik, in his welcome address, appreciated the role of gardeners to make this event successful. He hoped that PMAS-AAUR would organize such competitions and show in future as well.

More than 5,000 chrysanthemum plants were displayed and 15 institutes participated by putting the flowers from their respective nurseries on display.

At least 80 students of different schools, colleges and universities of twin cities also participated in dry, fresh flower and cut flower arrangements categories.

In the flower show more than 50 varieties of Chrysanthemum included Intermediate, incurved, Reflex, Sprays, Anemone, Pompons, Korean Hybrid, Single Flowered, Quill Flowered, Decorative, Spoon, etc, and other Autumn Flower And House Plats like Bougainvillea, Begonia, Coleus, Gerbera, Dahlia, Poinsettia, Impatiens, Marigold, Geranium, Flowering shrubs etc were displayed in the show.

People from the twin cities visited Arid Varsity to see the show and showed their appreciation and pleasure of the flower display. They said that it is a healthy activity and they are so pleased to see hundreds of shades of colors of autumn at one place. Residents of twin cities were of the view that the government should arrange more exhibitions, featuring particular flower and hoped that PMAS-AAUR would be organize such type of event in future as well.

A panel of judges on the occasion announced positions to the beautifully arranged Chrysanthemum flowers in which PHA and CDA got first and second position in large organizations category.

In Middle organizations category, Landscape and Floriculture Institute got first position.

PAF Air Headquarters and PAF Air House got first and second positions in small organizations category.

AIOU and PMAS-AAUR got first and second position in Universities category.

In Fresh Flower arrangement, Ayesha Khalil got first prize, while Saad Haider and Atika Amjad got third positions.

In Dry Flower Arrangements, Namra Habib stood first while Samara Javed & Natasha Sund got second and third positions.

In ladies and Professional Category Mrs. Hina Kamran and Mrs Razia Bilal got first and second positions, respectively while Ms Sara Niaz got third position.

Ayesha Khalid, Hina Kamran, and Syed Sana Aamir got first, second and third positions respectively in Ikebana Arrangement competition.

At the end, the chief guest distributed prizes and certificate among the winners of the show.

It may be recalled that the show was arranged by the Department of Horticulture of PMAS-AAUR with an aim to attract people from all walks of life and to promote rich healthy environment of the twin cities.
