Parents advised to be aware of measles outbreak


KARACHI  - Parents and family physicians in the City have been warned to remain cognizant of possible increase in measles cases during the current winter onset phase. Prof Ayesha Mehnaz, Chairperson, pediatrics department, Civil Hospital, Karachi talking to APP Thursday said the province went through an outbreak of measles last year and it would be appropriate that relevant care-takers are fully conscious of the possibility this year too.Rashes, red marks, possible fever and viral flu like symptoms as running nose, sore throat and cough are some of the manifestations of measles that must not be ignored under any condition, she said.To a question, she said children are vaccinated against the disease yet the measles immunization coverage rate is the lowest among all vaccinations done to protect kids against vaccine preventable diseases.To another question, Prof Ayesha Mehnaz said sporadic cases of measles were already reported to her hospital from different parts of the City.Delay in referral and inability of patients to receive timely care can lead to complication that may include empylitis, aggravated malnutrition, gastroenteritis and even death, she said.
