The first priority

Regarding "An auspicious day" (The Nation, April 8), I fully support the views expressed by Mr. Iftikhar Ahmed. We must give first priority to provision of cheap and speedy justice to our down trodden, highly oppressed and illiterate masses. They are deprived of many of their fundamental rights in our society, perennially dominated by the Maliks, Khans, Legaris, Mazaris, Khosas, Bugtis, and the like. The majority of our population is forced to live at a sub-human level under the above mentioned privileged class. We cannot provide justice to the needy without reinstalling the deposed judiciary under honourable Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry. He is one individual in the past sixty years of our judicial history who had exhibited courage, stamina, patience, and indomitable spirit not to yield against all sorts of pressure and allurements. -MAJ (Retd) SYED HAIDER HASSAN, Lahore, via e-mail, April 10.
