LAHORE - On Pakistan Day, government of Pakistan acknowledged the national level distinguished and meritorious services of Air Commodore Amer Altaf, Chief HR, PIA, by awarding him the coveted Sitara-e-Imtiaz (Military). National flag carrier, PIA has always been known for over employment, ill-discipline, inefficiency, corruption and political inductions mainly employed on fake degrees. Management has always been shackled by politically affiliated unions and associations. The mentioned ills were the main reasons for the national carrier becoming a loss making entity. All losses suffered by PIA could easily be attributable to human resource related issues mentioned above.

The current management led by Air Marshal Arshad Malik took over the task of revival of PIA. HR transformation was considered the most vital element in recovery of PIA. Chief HR, Air Commodore Amer Altaf, a hard task master, highly qualified in HR and having worked at various significant positions in the HR setup of PAF addressed all the HR related issues of PIA.

His main achievements included bringing discipline in employees, confining unions and associations within their legal boundaries, merit based HR related decisions, automating the HR processes, digitizing the employees record, re-appropriating the manpower where it was actually required, dismissal of 750 fake degree holders and 1300 ghost employees and above all rationalizing the manpower and bringing the employees to aircraft ratio from 520 employees per aircraft to 270 (close to industry practice). Despite handling the most challenging HR job in Pakistan, Air Commodore Amer Altaf achieved strategic achievements and did a national level service. The HR of PIA is now a disciplined workforce working without any political interference and is contributing towards revival of this National asset. The government of Pakistan and the PAF acknowledged the services of Air Commodore Amer Altaf by awarding him Sitara-e-Imtiaz (Military) on Pakistan Day, 23rd March.
