LAHORE - The number of traffic accidents on City roads have been increased up to alarming level of 400 per cent during the last six years, The Nation has reliably learnt. The data collected by this scribe reflects that total 8,560 traffic accidents took place in 2004-05 in Lahore. About 11,796 accidents occurred during 2006, 18,019 in 2007, 24,093 in 2008, 25,411 in 2009 and at least 30,210 traffic accidents took place during 2010 so far. The figures established that about 8.84 million victims suffered injuries of different kinds in total 118,089 accidents in the provincial capital so far. About 135,421 male and 34,825 females sustained severe injuries in the accidents. The data furnished by the officials of two main rescue services including Edhi Foundation and Rescue 1122 shows that youths (between 01 to 15 years) were the major victims of such accidents as total 28,415 youths suffered severe injuries. Total 25,212 youths (between 16 to 25 years) were the second large victims while the people (between 65 to 80 years) were in small number. At least 4,124 victims both male and females suffered spinal, 12,880 head injuries, 17,721 leg fracture, 25,424 multiple fracture, 45,836 minor injuries, while the rest of people sustained other kind of injuries during these accidents. The data shows that at least 59,514 motorbikes, 12,121 cars, 870 trucks, 4,011 wagons and almost 27,512 auto rickshaws were partially or completely damaged in traffic accidents. The main causes of these accidents were established over-speeding, carelessness, wrong driving methods, U-Turns etc. The information collected from Rescue 1122, Edhi Foundation, Traffic Engineering Transport Planning Authority (TEPA) and the City Traffic Police shows almost 27,421 traffic accidents occurred owing to over-speeding, 28511 due to carelessness, 9810 because of wrong travelling side, 5212 due to U-Turns and the rest of the accidents took place due to other reasons. Moreover, at least 50 per cent accidents took place at 17 most important points in the City including Garhi Shahu Chowk, Chamra Mandi, Chowk Circular Road, Lorry Adda, Bhati Chowk, Shahdara Turning Point, Kalma Chowk, Ferozpur Road, Canal Road, Do Moriya Bridge, Delhi Darwaza, Railway Station, Kacho Pura, Teezab Ihata, Chah Meran, Faiz Bagh, and Multan Road. A top official of TEPA, requesting anonymity, said that irrational construction of seven underpasses built by Lahore Development Authority (LDA) and Communication & Works Department were also the main cause of such accidents. He said the accidents could be controlled by the implementing the following four systems: I- Loop Detector System, II-Seat System, III-Timer System and IV-Automatic System. Chief Traffic Officer (CTO) SSP Syed Ahmed Mobin said the police have launched mass awareness campaigns in City and 70 traffic wardens were delivering special lectures in schools and colleges to create awareness in order to prevent road accidents. He said distribution of pamphlets, issuing challans in some cases and ban on one wheeling had showed positive results.
