PAKISTAN recorded their highest ever score in Test cricket by making 765 for six decalred on the fifth day of the first Test match against Sri Lanka at National Stadium, Karachi on Wednesday (February 25). It was also the highest total against Sri Lanka and fifth highest total in Test cricket. India who made 676 for seven at Kanpur in 1986-87 held the previous record. Pakistan's previous highest was 708 against England at The Oval in in 1987 while 699 for five against India at Lahore in 1989-90 was the previous highest at home. Pakistan's previous highest against Sri Lanka was 600 for eight decalred at Galle in 2000. It was 15th time when over 700 runs were scored in an innings while 750-run mark was crossed for the only eight times in 1909 Test matches. Mahela Jayawardene made 240 while Younis Khan scored 313 runs. It was the first instance of both captains scoring at least a double-century in the same game. The one occasion when this nearly happened was more than 30 years ago, when Sunil Gavaskar scored 205 against Alvin Kallicharan's West Indies at the Wankhede Stadium in 1978, and the opposition captain responded with 187. It happened only the second time of three batsmen scoring more than 200 in a Test match. The previous occasion was in 1965, in a Test between Australia and West Indies in Barbados, when Bill Lawry, Bob Simpson and Seymour Nurse all notched up doubles. However, it's the first time two double-hundred and a triple have been scored in the same Test.
