Discos privatisation: Union demands open debate

LAHORE: The government should place the important issue of proposed privatization plan of national public utility of electricity before the Parliament for holding open debate and increase hydel power generation on war footing basis to overcome serious loadshedding, besides appointing permanent chief executives of distribution companies. The proposed privatization of the profitable electricity entities of Punjab would give rise to inter-provincial disputes alike water distribution.
These views were expressed by veteran trade union leader Khurshid Ahmed, General Secretary All Pakistan WAPDA Hydro Electric Workers Union CBA, on the eve of publication of the announcement of the Privatization Commission for Privatization on privatization of profitable distribution companies in the Punjab. He warned the government not to proceed hastily on this issue of the national importance. He urged the Prime Minister to hold dialogue with all political parties and working class who are essential stakeholders. Otherwise, he said, the workers would be compelled to launch countrywide movement against the proposed privatization.–PR
