Avoidable catastrophe

The expected heavy rains in September have inundated Sindh, Balochistan and parts of southern Punjab with a sense of doom for the poor people who have turned refugees in their own country with meager belongings. Does it not bring tears to the eyes of our rulers? Do these pictures of drowning families not touch the hearts, of the elite who call themselves ‘Khadims’ (servants) while enjoying royal stature at the cost of this drowning nation? The hypocrisy is written on their faces when they fail to take any action to store rain water in dams, which could have later be used to create much needed energy. The construction of Kalabagh dam could have helped in avoiding this flooding as well as meet the requirement for power, but the incompetent rulers slept for four and a half years while crying ‘wolf’ about ‘Musharaf’ destroying the country. I would like to hold this democratic government accountable, and ask what they have done to take care or improve this country, except for lining their own pockets.May Allah give our leaders the strength to understand the dire need of Kalabagh dam to solve our water and power issues. UMME RUBAB, Karachi, September 22
