LAHORE – Violent protests erupted at Sundar Road on early Tuesday, shortly after a college student was crushed to death by a rashly-driven bus. The protesters, mostly college students, set a bus alight while they also pelted moving vehicles with stones.
Police said the boy, later identified as Usman Qadri, riding on the top of a bus was on the way to Government Technology College situated on Raiwind Road when suddenly he fell down and the bus ran over him. He died on the spot while the driver and the conductor leaving the bus on the road fled away from the scene.
A good number of people mostly students gathered on the spot and staged a strong protest demonstration by setting the tyres on fire. The angry protesters also threw the bus into the nearby canal and set another bus on fire. They also blocked the road, resulting in worst traffic mess in the entire locality during rush hours.
The students also pelted private vehicles with stones and created lawlessness like situation in the area. Later, heavy police contingents reached the spot and managed to disperse the protesters after holding a series of negotiations with them.
