Nawaz asks govt not to target judiciary

SIALKOT PML-N Quaid Mian Nawaz Sharif Saturday warned that Pakistan could not afford another martial law and said the PML-N was committed to serve Pakistan with honesty and a missionary zeal for ensuring supremacy of law and an independent judiciary in the country. We have not only supported but also participated in the long march for restoration of judges. Had the PML-N believed in a friendly opposition we would not have opted for the long march, he remarked. Nawaz demanded immediate trial of former dictator Gen (r) Pervez Musharraf in the larger national interest following the example set by Obama administration, which recently dismissed the US Commander in Afghanistan Gen Stanley McChrystal. The demand for a trial of Pervez Musharraf at the earliest has become the voice of the whole nation as the time is ripe for the move, Nawaz said. Addressing the party workers at the residence of late Khawaja Muhammad Safdar in Sialkot, he said the basic concept of Charter of Democracy was to set a new horizon for Pakistan and to rescue it out of multifarious problems. He said the trial of Pervez Musharraf for de-shaping the Constitution twice and so many other misdeeds was more imperative now, as the move would significantly reduce the possibility of martial law in the country. Nawaz said the PML-N had demanded Musharrafs trial while he was still in Pakistan, but President Zardari set aside it due to the 'political harmony between the two, adding that Zardari had allowed Musharraf to go abroad. It was very unfortunate that a 'guard of honour had been presented to a dictator while he was also given a safe passage with a mutual understanding, he said. Nawaz urged the judges to take suo moto against those who had changed the Constitution at their will and damaged the country. He also accused Federal Law Minister Babar Awan of trying to create a lobby against Chief Justice of Pakistan Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry by distributing Rs90 million among the bar associations in southern Punjab and Balochistan in a charted PAF plane. Nawaz pledged that the PML-N would resist and play an instrumental role against any move to target judiciary in the larger national interest and warned the government to desist from such course of action. He also reiterated that his party would continue its mission with an active support of the masses for bringing radical changes in the country. Nawaz lauded the role of PML-N workers from Sialkot for demonstrating courage and showing commitment to the party during Musharraf regime. He urged them to forge complete unity among their ranks for foiling any attempt against judiciary and strengthening democracy in the country. He also had a brief chat with reporters during which he made it clear that the PML-N would never accept the 'turncoats, saying there was no room for them in the party and the political future of turncoats was bleak in Pakistan. He said majority of such elements were the political remains of Pervez Musharraf, adding that the PML-N was promoting the politics of principles and reconciliation. Earlier, senior party leader Khawaja Muhammad Asif in his address said a prosperous Pakistan was not possible without the rule of law and elimination of corruption. Asif said that the turncoats had ruined the spirit of democracy. It is a high time that we should get rid of such elements for purging the politics of those who change their loyalty. Later, Nawaz inquired about health of Begum Khawaja Muhammad Safdar, the mother of Khawaja Muhammad Asif.
