Sindh MPA seeks to make marriage mandatory after turning 18 years old

Sindh Assembly has received a bill which calls for making it mandatory for parents to get their children married upon turning 18 years old. The bill further suggests to impose 500 fine, incase of violation.

The bill is termed as Sindh Compulsory Marriage Act, 2021.

Muttahida Majlis-e-Amal's member Syed Abdul Rasheed has given in a draft of this bill in the assembly.

The proposed bill suggests that incase of exceptions, the parents of the children at 18 years of age must submit an application in the deputy commissioner's office explaining the reason of not marrying their children off at 18 years of age.

Incase of non compliance with the bill, a penalty of 500rs would be imposed on the parents. The 500rs fine would be for each 18 years and above unmarried child, the bill suggested.

The MMA lawmaker has justified his bill by stating that it is in accordance with the teachings of Islam which appreciates marriage at the attainment of adulthood.

He further suggested that laws must be made by the government to make the wedding ceremonies as simple as possible. He opines that his proposed bill would bring about a decline in the number of immoral activities present in the society.

He concluded by saying that the government must play its part in ensuring that marriage ceremonies are taking place in accordance with the Islamic teachings
