Italian far right set to take power with Meloni first female PM

ROME - Giorgia Meloni looks set to become Italy’s first far-right leader since World War Two.  Her party Brothers of Italy is projected to have won 26% of the vote, meaning she is on course to become Italy’s first female leader, too. Her right-wing alliance - including Matteo Salvini’s League and former PM Silvio Berlusconi’s Forza Italia is on course to control both houses of parliament. Speaking to reporters after the vote, she promised to govern for all Italians and said she would not betray their trust. She has softened her image and resents being linked to Italy’s fascist past, but she still embraces an old slogan adopted by the fascists - “God, fatherland and family”. Western government say they respect the outcome and vow to co-operate with Meloni; far-right European leaders hail her victory.
