LAHORE - The government colleges in Punjab have started admissions in second shift of Intermediate classes. The second merit list of morning shift was displayed on August 25 and the third was displayed on Friday. The second shift merit list was also displayed on Friday which showed no significant drop from the high merit. The admissions in the second shift were also being made on merit which will continue, before the start of the classes, after Eid. The last merit list in the second shift remained 650 to 600 in the Pre-engineering and Pre-medical, 550 in ICom, 520 in ICS and 500 marks in Arts. The second shift classes is currently continuing in over 20 boys and girls colleges of Lahore and all the major colleges in the province. The second shift starts from 12 noon up to 4.30pm. The tuition fee in the morning is Rs2,500 per annum plus equal amount of computer fee where computer labs are working under the public/private partnership scheme. The second shift tuition fee is almost double from the 1st shift while there is no difference in timetable, courses of study and the faculty. The second shift accommodates almost all the students seeking admission on merit in the colleges in various Intermediate disciplines. The colleges which hold the BCom classes also run its second shift. Thousands of students who fail to meet the high merit in morning shift find an opportunity to avail admission in second shift. The morning shift teachers also teach the second shift on per lecture remuneration basis while dozens of teachers are also engaged from outside on per lecture remuneration. This year, in view of the increasing number of students seeking admission in the first and second shift, the college administrations may not be able to give admissions to all if they have to maintain the number of students in a class to maximum 60 for the interest of quality education. The private sector colleges affiliated with the Board of Intermediate & Secondary Education have also started admission in the Intermediate classes which will continue till the last week of October, being the last date of registration of students with the Board. The Government College University, Lahore College for Women University and FC College University are also making admission in the Intermediate classes where the merit in pre-engineering and pre-medical is exceptionally high.
