JI demands census before general elections

KARACHI: Jamaat-e-Islami Sindh chapter ameer Merajul Huda Siddiqui on Saturday demanded the government to conduct the national census before next general elections.  He said the JI believed that the census is the basis of democracy which ensures the fair distribution of resources and NFC award amongst the provinces. He said that the number of national and provincial constituencies also increases as the result of census. He said that it is the constitutional and ethical responsibility of the government to conduct the national census after every ten years.  The JI leader said that it seemed the government is deliberately delaying the census and thus it is keeping people deprived of their basic right. He said that they are concerned about this injustice. Siddiqui added that the government had used the delaying tactics in local government elections, but it was compelled conduct due to the court order. Later, it wasted one year for conducting mayoral elections.

He said that the transfer of authorities to local government is still an unresolved issue. Separately, JI Sindh summoned an urgent meeting of its Majlis-e-Shura in the Quba Auditorium on September 4 to discuss the prevailing political circumstances of Sindh and entire country.–Staff Reporter
