VEHARI – Local ice factories have been cashing in on the heat wave, depriving the masses of cold water.
Like other plain areas of the country, a scorching heat wave struck Vehari where temperature hit at 45 degree Celsius.
The prolonged loadshedding has been adding to public woes. In such a situation, the only facility that the poor can avail to beat the heat is cold drinking water.
Taking advantage of the weather, the factory owners are selling ice at staggering price after creating artificial shortage. On the other hand, the administration has turned a deaf ear to a litany of complaints by the heat-hit people.
According to shopkeeper, one ice block costs Rs1200 which is very high not only for them but for the customers as well.
But the people fell back on buying the ice at such a high price as they find it difficult to get ice from their own refrigerators because the unscheduled loadshedding.
According to Chaudhry Barkat, owner of Barkat Ice Factory, he ran his factory with the help of generator amid prolonged loadshedding, resulting in price hike...
“Generators run 200kv motors and consume maximum fuel so it is not in our hand to sell low-priced ice”
