Rahim Yar Khan  -  In anticipation of Muharram-ul-Haram, the district administration of Rahim Yar Khan has decided to implement the most stringent security measures in its history to ensure peace and order across the district. In a high-level security briefing, authorities revealed a comprehensive, multi-layered plan designed to prevent sectarian unrest and maintain public safety throughout the holy month.

As part of these extraordinary precautions, entry of forty-seven (47) firebrand religious scholars from various provinces has been strictly prohibited, while thirty local clerics have been issued gag orders to restrict provocative speeches and activities. These steps reflect the administration’s commitment to curbing any potential incitement and fostering a climate of tolerance and unity.

District Police Officer (DPO) Irfan Ali Samo, addressing journalists on Friday, detailed that this Muharram, the district will host 226 processions and 457 majalis (religious gatherings). To secure these events, an impressive contingent of over 4,000 police officers will be deployed. They will be supported by Rescue 1122, Civil Defence, municipal committees, WAPDA staff, and bomb disposal squads, all prepared to respond rapidly to any emergency. Their coordinated presence is expected to enhance the district’s capacity to handle large crowds and mitigate risks.

Significantly, the administration has decided that all procession routes will be sealed eight hours before the start of each event, allowing for thorough security sweeps and preparation. The processions themselves will be cordoned off with ropes to prevent unauthorized access, thereby minimizing the risk of infiltration or disruption. For the first time, the district will deploy trained sniffer dogs, drones, and a robust network of CCTV cameras, enabling real-time surveillance and swift intervention if required.

DPO Samo further disclosed that individuals on the Fourth Schedule and those with a record of sectarian involvement will be closely monitored. A complete ban has been enforced on wall chalking and misuse of loudspeakers, both of which have previously contributed to unrest and agitation during sensitive periods.

To further strengthen the district’s emergency response, control rooms are being set up at both district and tehsil headquarters, each equipped with five telephone lines operating around the clock. This will ensure any incident or suspicious activity is reported and addressed without delay. Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) have been devised at every administrative level, guaranteeing a rapid and coordinated response to any unforeseen situation.

In a special appeal to the public, DPO Samo urged citizens to use social media responsibly throughout Muharram. He advised against forwarding unverified information or rumors, emphasizing the importance of fact-checking before sharing any content, especially negative or inflammatory news. The district administration has stressed that the cooperation and vigilance of the public are vital in maintaining peace and preventing the spread of misinformation.

These unprecedented security arrangements underscore the district administration’s resolve to protect the sanctity of Muharram and maintain communal harmony. The authorities have called on all residents to support the initiatives, respect the guidelines, and play their part in ensuring a peaceful and respectful observance of this sacred month.
