PESHAWAR - Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Governor Engineer Shaukatullah has said that students’ interests would be safeguarded and efforts are underway to further improve facilities of higher learning and development of universities in the province as well.
Presiding over the Senate meeting of the University of Peshawar at Governor’s House Peshawar on Tuesday, the governor while appreciating the working of the institution was of the view that despite financial constraints its services are extremely important for ensuring quality opportunities of higher learning to the students as well.
The Senate took strong exception to the constant trend of presenting deficit budget of the institution and stressed not only to cover financial deficiencies but also to maintain highest standards of administrative and financial management in every sphere of its working.
Senator Farhatullah Babar, MPA Muzaffar Saed, Secretary Higher Education Farah Hamed, Principal Secretary to Governor Dr Fakhar-e-Alam Irfan, special secretaries of the provincial establishment and finance departments also attended the meeting beside other members of the senate while the Vice Chancellor, Professor Dr Rasool Jan flanked by the registrar of the University briefed the participants about salient features of the agenda items as well as their achievements.
“We have plugged every hole in administrative systems of the institution what we considered un-necessary and as a result of our hectic efforts, the university has been judged 7th at national level in recent rankings of HEC,” the senate was informed.
The Senate noted with appreciation that a high-powered committee has been constituted to seek ways and means to curtail expenditures of all public sector universities; enhance their resources and ensure their efficient working.
The meeting after having thorough discussion approved actual expenditures for the year, 2012-13 and budgetary estimates for the year, 2013-14 and also decided to hold its next meeting in July every year.
